Recently a lot of businesses have expressed interest in starting a blog, and with good reason. Blogs are a low cost way to improve your online visibility.

What is a blog?

The term “blog” is actually short for “weblog”. A blog is generally a web page made up of short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically, similar to a daily log or a journal.

How you use your blog is up to you. Use it to share advice or knowledge; to advertise products or services; as an online newsletter or photo gallery; as a discussion board for any number of topics; or as a way to keep in touch with your employees, friends or clients. You can add it to an existing site or establish it as a new site with it’s own domain name.

Would a blog be good for your business?

A blog can be a powerful tool to drive traffic to your business or website. If used properly they are very search-engine friendly with tools to capitalize on your keywords. Search engines also favor websites that update their content regularly, which a blog accomplishes easily – provided you commit to it.

Additionally, a blog can be set up to allow re-posting of your entries. If your articles are informative and compelling a reader may choose to repost it on their own blog or Facebook page, which widens your online audience.

Blogs are not for everyone.

Blogs can have a downside. Blogging does not provide all the functionality of web pages, and has limits for e-commerce solutions.

Be realistic about how much time you can devote to your blog. If your time schedule does not allow for you to make regular updates, blogging will not be to your advantage.

Another item to consider: according to a recent survey, only 27% of Internet users in America look at blogs. Keep in mind that having a blog will not automatically guarantee you thousands of new customers. It is only one piece of the marketing puzzle.
